Cat Home Alone During the Holidays: The Complete Preparation Guide

Short answer

Leaving a cat alone at home for a maximum of 24–48 hours is fine with the right preparation: automatic feeder, large drinking fountain, clean litter tray and a cat sitter for longer periods. For holidays of more than 2 days: always someone who comes daily — no exceptions.

  • ✓ 24–48 hours alone: automatic feeder + large drinking fountain sufficient
  • ✓ 3–7 day holiday: daily sitter + automatic food + water
  • ✗ Never leave a cat without human contact for more than 48 hours
  • ✓ Camera on feeder: track eating remotely via the app

The holiday period is a logistical puzzle for cat owners. Taking the cat along is not an option; a cattery is an option but not always practical. Most owners solve it with a combination of automatic care and a sitter who comes round. How you set that up smartly is the difference between a carefree holiday and daily worries about your cat.

Cats are basically self-sufficient — but not autonomous. A cat can cope with its owner's absence, provided food, water and a clean litter tray are available. Social interaction remains necessary: even a brief daily visit from a sitter is enough to prevent stress.

Step by step: setting up the feeder for the holiday

  1. Check the food reservoir one day before departureFill the automatic feeder to maximum capacity. For a 6L feeder and an average cat (portion ~50 g/day) that reservoir gives 120 portions — more than enough for 1 week at 2–3 meals per day.
  2. Check the meal schedule in the appOpen the app and verify all meal times are correctly set for the holiday period. Manually test a portion dispensing to confirm the device is working properly. Check battery status if the device also runs on battery.
  3. Set up camera notificationsActivate notifications for every meal dispensing — that way you get confirmation that the cat has been at the bowl. If you get no notification for a day? Then you know to call the sitter to check.
  4. Fill the drinking fountain and check the filterA 2.5L drinking fountain provides 5–7 days of water for one cat under normal use. Replace the filter before departure if it’s more than 4 weeks old. Put an extra (still) water bowl as backup next to the fountain in case the fountain fails.
  5. Arrange a daily sitter for holidays of 3+ daysA sitter who comes by for 15–20 minutes per day is enough: clean the litter tray, let in fresh air (open a window) and social contact. Give the sitter the vet's number, the cat's EU pet passport (if you have one) and access to the feeder app for emergencies.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a cat be left alone at most?
With automatic feeder and drinking fountain: 48 hours is the safe limit. After that stress increases — cats are more socially dependent than is often thought. At 72 hours alone the litter tray also becomes a problem (too full). The practical limit for a well-prepared holiday without a sitter is a maximum of 2 nights.
Do I need to give someone a key if I'm on holiday?
For holidays of 3+ days: yes, always. Not only for the cat — also for emergencies (fire, water pipe, power failure). A daily sitter who comes round is the only reliable safety net for situations that the automation doesn't cover. Also give the sitter the vet's number and specific instructions for emergencies.
Can I take my cat on holiday?
That depends on the cat and type of holiday. Most cats are attached to their territory and are more stressed by the travel itself than by staying home alone. A well-prepared home situation with a sitter is less stressful for most cats than travelling by car. Cats that are used to travelling (young age, regular trips) adapt more quickly.
Drinking Fountains

Water without worries during the holiday

A 2.5L drinking fountain gives your cat 5–7 days of clean, filtered running water. No tipped-over bowl, no stagnant water with bacteria. The logical partner of the automatic feeder.
