Fontanna wodna dla kotów: dlaczego bieżąca woda jest tak ważna

Quick answer

Cats naturally drink more water when it is moving. A water fountain stimulates drinking behaviour, filters bacteria from the water and reduces the risk of kidney problems — the most common chronic disease in cats.

  • ✓ Running water stimulates the drinking instinct of cats
  • ✓ Cats drink 30–50% more from a fountain than from a static bowl
  • ✓ Carbon filter removes bacteria and bad taste
  • ✓ Quiet pump — no noise at night

Most cat owners put down a water bowl and don't think about it further. Understandable — but it also explains why so many cats chronically drink too little. Cats are evolutionarily programmed to be suspicious of stagnant water. In nature, stagnant water stands still more often because it is contaminated. Running water is fresh and safe.

A water fountain plays directly into that instinct. The results are consistent: cats that switch to a fountain demonstrably drink more. And drinking more means less kidney stress, fewer urinary tract problems and a cat that feels better.

💧

Did you know? Kidney diseases are the number 1 cause of death in cats over 7 years old. Chronic dehydration is the most important risk factor — and also the easiest to prevent.

Why cats prefer running water

In the wild, cats drank from streams, brooks and rain puddles — not from stagnant ponds. Stagnant water was a danger signal in nature: a pond where animals had died, water that had stood too long in the heat. The instinct to distrust stagnant water is deeply ingrained.

A modern water fountain simulates that brook. The sound of flowing water attracts the cat. The movement on the surface makes the water visible — cats have difficulty estimating the water level in a still bowl and sometimes avoid getting their nose wet.

Practical observation: Many owners report that their cat suddenly starts guarding the tap or drinking from a glass. That is not a quirk — that is a cat actively looking for running water. A water fountain solves that behaviour.

What makes a good cat water fountain?

Not all water fountains are equal. These are the points where it really makes a difference:

FeatureWhy it mattersWhat you want
CapacitySmall bowl dries out faster, more frequent refillingAt least 2 litres, preferably 2.5L+
Pump noiseNoisy pump scares cat away and disturbs at night< 30 dB (whisper quiet)
FilterWithout filter bacteria grows quicklyCarbon + foam filter combination
MaterialPlastic scratches and harbours bacteriaBPA-free plastic or stainless steel bowl
MaintenanceComplex construction = less cleaning = more bacteriaDisassemblable, dishwasher safe

Our recommendation

The D600A combines all these points in one compact device. Quiet double pump, 2.5 litres capacity, carbon filter and fully disassemblable for cleaning. Available in black and white.

How to get your cat used to a water fountain

  1. Place the fountain next to the old bowlLeave both out during the first week. The cat discovers the fountain at her own pace without the familiar bowl disappearing.
  2. Use the right heightPlace the fountain on a non-slip mat on the floor. Cats prefer to drink when their whiskers don't touch the edge of the bowl.
  3. Always keep the fountain filledAn empty fountain makes an annoying pump noise and puts off the cat. Refill when the water drops below the minimum mark.
  4. Clean weeklyFully disassemble the fountain, rinse all parts and replace the filter every 3–4 weeks. Bacteria in the water is smelled by a cat from metres away — and she will then stop drinking.

Tip: Do not place the fountain next to the litter tray. Cats want to keep their drinking spot and toilet spot separate — this is instinctive behaviour. A separate room or at least 2 metres apart is ideal.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace the filter?
On average every 3 to 4 weeks with 1 cat, every 2 to 3 weeks with multiple cats or in a warm room. A filter left in too long no longer works as a filter — it becomes a source of bacteria itself. Replacement filters for the D600A are available separately via our webshop.
My cat drinks enough from her bowl — why switch?
Cats hide dehydration well. A cat that "looks normal" may be chronically drinking too little without it being directly visible. Only at an older age, when the kidneys have already sustained damage, do symptoms become noticeable. A water fountain is prevention, not just a solution for cats that visibly drink little.
How much noise does the pump make?
The D600A has a double pump that stays below 30 dB at full power — comparable to whispering. The only thing you hear is the gentle babbling of the water itself. Most owners sleep with the fountain in the bedroom without any disturbance.
Is a water fountain suitable for dogs too?
Yes, the D600A works for small to medium-sized dogs too. For large dogs (Labrador, Golden Retriever), the 2.5 litre capacity is a bit small — they drink up to 1 litre per day. In that case, more frequent refilling is required, but the fountain works fine.

A water fountain handles the water. An automatic feeder handles the food. Together you ensure your cat always eats and drinks on schedule — even when you are away.
