Using an automatic ball launcher outdoors works excellently: you use the full throwing distance, your dog has more space to run and the play session is more intensive than in a living room. But outdoor use also brings specific points of attention: surface, rain, wind and safety in an open space.
Using an automatic ball launcher outdoors: throwing distance up to 24 metres
Indoors you use the shortest throw setting. Outdoors you use all three settings fully. On setting 3 the automatic ball launcher shoots ETPU balls up to 24 metres. That is the distance at which large, energetic dogs really have to run — not stroll, but sprint-fetching.
With tennis balls the maximum throwing distance on setting 3 is only 12 metres, due to the higher weight (57 g vs 30 g). That is noticeable outdoors: your dog covers less distance per throw, the play session is less intensive. For outdoor use ETPU balls are the standard. Wind direction affects the flight. In wind above Beaufort 4 your dog notices that the ball lands in a different place than expected. That is not a problem — it makes the session more unpredictable and therefore more mentally challenging. Set the shorter throw setting in strong wind so that the variation stays manageable.
Which surface works best?
The ball launcher stands on four rubber feet. These provide stability on hard and soft surfaces. Do bear in mind the following:

On paving slabs and concrete ETPU balls bounce differently than on grass. The ball bounces higher and further. Keep at least 3 metres of space behind the shooting line clear so the ball does not bounce back against a wall or fence towards the device.
Rain and moisture: the crucial role of ball type
The ball launcher itself is splash-proof. Short rain showers during use are no problem. Never leave the device unattended in the rain and do not place it on the grass if rain is expected overnight. Splash-proof means the device can handle rain from above; prolonged moisture exposure from below (wet grass) is a different matter.
The ball type is at least as important as the device itself in rain. Tennis balls absorb water. After ten minutes on wet grass a tennis ball can be 20 to 30% heavier. That extra mass reduces throwing distance, slows the bounce and can cause the ball to stick to the funnel opening. ETPU foam rubber has closed cells and does not absorb water — throwing distance remains the same whether dry or wet.

Safety outdoors: space and other animals
Outdoors the play area is larger, but also less controlled. Bear in mind the following:
Minimum clear space. Allow at least 6 metres width and the full throwing distance (up to 24 metres) plus 3 metres buffer behind the shooting point. On setting 3 you therefore need an open area of at least 27 metres. In a small garden use setting 1 or 2.
Other dogs or animals nearby. The safety sensor detects your own dog. If a second dog or cat enters the sensor's field of view, the device waits until the path is clear. In a fenced garden this is rarely a problem. On public ground: use the remote so you determine the launch moment.
Automatic shut-off. After 30 minutes the device shuts off automatically, also outdoors. This protects your dog against overexertion. Give him 20 minutes rest after each session.
After use: maintenance and storage
After outdoor use there are three steps:
1. Rinse the balls. ETPU balls can pick up dirt or grass. Rinse them under the tap and dry them before the next session. The smooth surface does not hold dirt.
2. Check the funnel opening. Check whether there is grass, sand or dirt in the funnel opening. A blocked funnel delays sensor detection. Wipe the opening clean with a dry cloth.
3. Store indoors. Always store the device indoors. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight accelerates wear of the plastic housing. Storing in the shed is fine, leaving it outside is not.
Keep the funnel opening clean. If you regularly play on wet grass or muddy surfaces, also clean the inside of the funnel weekly with a damp cloth. Dry before use. A clean funnel ensures reliable sensor detection.

For daily outdoor use a refill set of 12 is recommended. You always have clean spare balls ready while the wet ones dry. With intensive use and a heavy chewer you go through an average of 2 balls per month.
