Wet food in automatic feeder

Slide image

Short answer

Automatic feeders are designed for dry food. Wet food doesn't fit in the screw mechanism, disrupts portioning and spoils quickly at room temperature. Use the feeder exclusively for kibble and give wet food manually as a special treat.

  • Wet food clogs the screw mechanism: the feeder can jam
  • At room temperature, wet food spoils within 2 to 4 hours
  • Dry food stays fresh for days in the sealed reservoir
  • Combine: dry food via the feeder, wet food manually at set times

Wet food and automatic feeders are not compatible. Not because of a design choice, but because of the physical properties of wet food itself. In this article, we explain why, and how you can still combine the best of both worlds.

Why wet food doesn't work in an automatic feeder

Most automatic feeders work with a screw mechanism: a rotating shaft that transports kibble from the reservoir to the bowl. Wet food has a completely different texture. It's moist, sticky and clumps together. In the screw mechanism, wet food quickly sticks to the walls of the transport channel. Additionally, wet food spoils quickly at room temperature. After 2 to 4 hours, wet food at room temperature is no longer safe for your cat.

The screw mechanism is designed with tight tolerances.

Even a small amount of moist material can cause the motor to become overloaded and the feeder to stop. Always use dry food to protect the lifespan of your feeder.

What happens in practice if you put wet food in it

  • Blockage problem: wet food sticks to the transport channel and blocks the outlet. The feeder appears to work, but no food comes out.
  • Motor overload: if the blockage becomes too large, the motor automatically stops. The feeder shows an error message in the app.
  • Hygiene problem: wet food left in the reservoir starts to rot and attracts bacteria, mould and insects.
  • Missed meal: your cat expects food at the scheduled time, but the bowl is blocked.

How to combine dry food with wet food

  • Dry food via feeder: set 2 to 3 meals per day for your adult cat. The feeder ensures consistent feeding times.
  • Wet food manually: give this in the morning or evening when you're at home. Remove the bowl after a maximum of 30 minutes.
  • Add a water fountain: an automatic water fountain provides constant fresh, filtered water.
