Quick answer
Does your adult cat regularly stand at your kitten's food bowl? Then it is eating too many calories and too much protein. Over time, this leads to obesity and fat storage. The good news: it can easily be resolved with two separate food bowls in separate locations.
In this article
You have brought a kitten into your home, alongside your existing adult cat. You set up two bowls, place them next to each other in the hallway, and assume each cat will eat what is meant for it. Until a few days later you notice that your adult cat is consistently emptying the kitten’s bowl.
There is a reason an adult cat eats kitten food: it is richer in flavour, more calorie-dense, and feels like a more satisfying meal. But for an adult cat, that is far too much. Too many calories, too much protein, too much phosphorus.
There are two patterns that explain this behaviour, and they reinforce each other.
The first pattern is preference. Kitten food is tastier than adult food. An adult cat will almost always choose the latter.
The second pattern is dominance. In a multi-cat household, the food bowl is a status spot. The adult cat dominates feeding time.
Kitten food provides 380 to 420 kcal per 100 grams of dry food. An adult cat needs 320 to 360 kcal per 100 grams. Obesity in cats increases the risk of diabetes, joint problems and a shorter life expectancy.
Kitten food contains a minimum of 35% protein on dry matter. Adult food sits at a minimum of 26%.
Kitten food is tailored to the growth needs of a young cat. Consistently too much phosphorus can contribute to kidney damage in adult cats.
| Nutrient | Kitten food | Adult food |
|---|---|---|
| Calories (per 100g) | 380–420 kcal | 320–360 kcal |
| Protein | min. 35% | min. 26% |
| Fat | min. 18% | min. 9% |
| Calcium | 1.0% (growth) | 0.6% (maintenance) |
| Phosphorus | 0.9% (growth) | 0.5% (maintenance) |
Place the feeding bowls at least 3 to 5 metres apart. Separate rooms work better.
A feeder with a flap only opens at set times. The adult cat literally cannot open the kitten’s bowl.
Using the Prime AnimalZ app, you set a name, schedule, and portion per feeder.
The built-in HD camera lets you see live via the app who is eating.

Occasionally, no. But regularly eating too much kitten food will lead to obesity in an adult cat due to the higher calorie density.
Kitten food provides an average of 380 to 420 kcal per 100 grams of dry food. Adult food sits at 320 to 360 kcal per 100 grams.
This is a common pattern in cats that have become accustomed to kitten food. The transition back to adult food is easiest done gradually.
We advise against it. Two separate feeders are the only way to give both animals exactly what they need.
In theory, yes. In practice, an RFID feeder has a limitation: a quick second cat can gain access at the same time.
Via the HD camera in the feeder, you can watch live through the app.
Summary
An adult cat that regularly eats kitten food consumes too many calories, too much protein, and too much phosphorus. The solution is simple: two separate automatic feeders, separate locations, and each with its own schedule.
