Quick answer
Leaving your pet alone for a weekend takes more preparation than most people think. Three things need to be sorted: food at set times, continuous fresh water, and for cats, a clean litter box. With the right tools, you can do this without relying on anyone else.
-
✓Automatic feeder: meals at set times via the app, even when you're away
-
✓Water fountain: continuous fresh filtered water, not a standing bowl
-
✓Automatic litter box: clean box without anyone needing to stop by
-
✓Camera check: see via the app whether your pet is eating well and feeling fine

It was a Friday afternoon. Suitcases at the door, car double-parked, and our cat was giving us that look every cat owner knows. Not accusatory. More like: I know what's happening.
Our neighbour had promised to stop by to feed her. She was happy to do it. But she also had a full schedule, a child, and a life that doesn't revolve around our feeding times. Friday evening, sitting in our hotel room, I sent her a message. No reply. Saturday morning either.
The weekend was great. But somewhere in the back of my mind it kept turning: has she fed her? How's the water? Is the litter box already too full? That feeling is familiar to anyone who has ever left a pet at home. And it's exactly that feeling that made us think.
Why wait until something goes wrong?
We're not alone in this. Almost everyone who has a cat or dog has experienced it. You arrange something. Someone steps in. But the system doesn't work perfectly and somewhere something always goes wrong, or you spend the whole time worrying that it might.
The problem isn't the neighbour. She did her best. The problem is that we handed a responsibility to someone whose daily life isn't set up for it. A person has appointments, distractions and forgetfulness. A good system doesn't.
That weekend we asked ourselves: why do we completely rely on someone else for this important task? Not out of indifference, but simply because we'd never really thought about it. And when we got home, we knew what we had to do.
For cats: what you need to have sorted

Did you know?
Cats are creatures of habit. They expect their meals at set times, even when you're not there. A cat that misses several meals doesn't just get hungry, it gets stressed. And stress in cats shows up in ways you'd rather not come home to.
For cats, a weekend away comes down to three things: food at set times, enough water, and a clean litter box. That sounds simple. But if you organise it manually, you need someone for each of those three things. And then you're dependent on three moments where something can go wrong.
Food: Cats prefer several small meals a day. With an automatic feeder, you set that schedule via the app, days in advance. The feeder dispenses exactly the right portion at the set times, even if you're in a hotel or on the motorway. Via the HD camera you can also see whether your cat has actually eaten.

Water: A standing water bowl is less appealing to cats than most people think. Cats naturally prefer running water, and a bowl that sits for an entire weekend becomes cloudy and unattractive. A water fountain with a filter keeps the water fresh and moving, without you having to do anything.

Did you know?
Dogs that eat at set times are noticeably calmer around mealtimes. A dog that knows when it eats will beg less, be less focused on food for comfort, and accept better that you're briefly away. Routine for dogs isn't just convenience, it's wellbeing.
For dogs, feeding comes with an extra element: walks. An automatic feeder can't solve that and always requires someone to stop by or a dog walking service. But organising that one task is much easier than organising three tasks well. Food and water can be fully automated, so the person who stops by only needs to focus on the walk.
For medium and large dogs: choose a reservoir of at least 7L so the feeder doesn't run empty halfway through the weekend. Via the app you set two meals a day, morning and evening, and you receive a notification when your dog has eaten. You know exactly how things are going, even if the dog walking service couldn't make it.

The litter box: the most underestimated problem
Food and water are most people's first thought. The litter box less so, and that's a mistake. Cats are naturally clean animals. A litter box that hasn't been cleaned for too long is refused by many cats. And then they find their own alternative. That alternative is rarely what you had in mind.
A manual litter box requires at least a daily visitor for a weekend away. An automatic litter box cleans itself after each use via a sensor. The drawer you empty only needs replacing a few times a week. For a weekend away, you don't need anyone to stop by at all.

What we ordered that Sunday evening
My girlfriend and I got home on Sunday afternoon. The cat was fine. The neighbour had managed to find time on Saturday to feed her. But the litter box was full, the water cloudy, and we'd made the whole journey home with a slightly uneasy feeling.
That same evening we ordered two things: an automatic feeder and a water fountain. A few weeks later, when we noticed how differently it felt to leave without that worry in the back of our heads, the automatic litter box followed. Not because we had to. But because the peace of mind it brings makes all the difference.
I don't choose Prime AnimalZ products because they're popular or sell well. I choose them because they genuinely make life easier for pet owners. That's why I started Prime AnimalZ. And that weekend reminded me again why it's worth it.
"We went away for a long weekend to London and left our cat home alone for the first time. The feeder and the water fountain gave so much peace of mind, I'd almost forgotten she was there. Through the app I could see she'd eaten. That makes the difference."

The routine that makes your pet happy
Pets are creatures of habit. They thrive with set times, set places, and a predictable environment. A good routine isn't a luxury for a cat or dog, it's a basic requirement for wellbeing.
The good news is that as an owner you can largely automate this routine. Feeding at set times via the app. Fresh water without thinking about it. A clean litter box without daily scooping. What remains is the time you actually spend with your pet, and that's exactly the time that counts.
A weekend away shouldn't be a source of stress. Not for you, and not for your pet. Browse the feeders, water fountains and automatic litter boxes and choose what fits your situation.
Frequently asked questions
How long can you leave a cat alone at home?
A healthy adult cat can be alone for 24 to 48 hours with sufficient food, fresh water and a clean litter box. Longer than 48 hours without someone checking in is not recommended. With an automatic feeder, water fountain and automatic litter box, you can go away for a full weekend without basic care being compromised. Read more in our article about how long you can leave a cat alone.
How long can you leave a dog alone at home?
Most dogs can be alone for 4 to 6 hours. Leaving a dog alone for a full weekend without someone regularly stopping by for walks and social contact is not responsible. An automatic feeder handles the food. For walks you need a dog walking service or a trusted person who can come by several times a day.
What do I do with the litter box if I'm away for a weekend?
With a manual litter box you need someone to stop by daily to clean it. An automatic litter box cleans itself after each use via a sensor and automatically pushes clumps into a sealed waste drawer. The drawer only needs replacing a few times a week, so you can go away for a full weekend without the litter box becoming a problem.
Does an automatic feeder work for dogs too?
Yes, all Prime AnimalZ feeders are suitable for both cats and dogs. The maximum kibble size is 15 mm, which works for most medium and large dogs. For larger breeds with bigger kibble we recommend a reservoir of at least 7L. Via the app you set the schedule and receive a notification when your dog has eaten.
How do I see via the app whether my pet is eating properly?
All Prime AnimalZ feeders have a built-in HD camera with night vision. Via the corresponding app you receive a notification when the feeder has dispensed a meal. You can also watch live and review recordings. So you know exactly whether your cat or dog has eaten, even when you're away.
