Litter Tray for Large Cats: What Are the Requirements?

Quick answer

A litter tray for large cats must be at least 1.5× the body length of the cat. For a Maine Coon of 70 cm that means a tray of at least 105 cm. The opening must be wide enough to turn around freely. A standard tray of 45 cm is too small for large breeds.

  • ✓ Formula: minimum tray length = 1.5 × body length of cat
  • ✓ Maine Coon (50–70 cm) → tray minimum 75–105 cm
  • ✓ Large cats refuse a tray that is too small and urinate beside it
  • ✓ Automatic XXL litter box: 72L interior, 42 cm opening

Large cats — Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Norwegian Forest Cats, Siberian cats — are magnificent animals, but they have higher requirements for their litter tray than the average European Shorthair. The most common problem with large cats: the tray is too small. A tray that is too small leads to refusal, eliminating beside the tray or uncomfortable use where the cat touches the rim. Not out of disobedience — but simply because the cat does not fit properly.

Size by Breed: What Do You Need?

Breed Average length (nose–tail) Weight Minimum tray length Recommendation
European Shorthair 40–50 cm 3.5–5 kg 60–75 cm Standard sufficient
British Shorthair 45–55 cm 4–8 kg 68–83 cm Standard or XXL
Norwegian Forest Cat 50–65 cm 4–9 kg 75–98 cm ✓ XXL recommended
Ragdoll 55–70 cm 5–9 kg 83–105 cm ✓ XXL required
Maine Coon 55–75 cm 5–12 kg 83–113 cm ✓ XXL required
Siberian cat 50–65 cm 5–9 kg 75–98 cm ✓ XXL recommended

A low entry point is also a requirement for older large cats: large breeds gain weight faster and develop joint problems earlier. A litter tray with a low entry point (less than 15 cm high) is not a luxury for Maine Coons over 8 years old but a requirement. The XXL version of our self-cleaning litter tray has an entry height of 12 cm.

What Goes Wrong with a Tray That Is Too Small?

Owners think their cat is displaying "bad behaviour" when it eliminates beside the tray. In many cases the tray is too small:

  • Cat touches the wall: in a tray that is too narrow the cat cannot manoeuvre properly and eliminates against the rim or beside it
  • Cat refuses the tray: cats avoid uncomfortable situations — a tray that is too small is simply not used
  • Automatic tray with too small an opening: a large cat that has to squeeze through a narrow opening will stop using the tray after once or twice

Frequently Asked Questions

Which litter tray is suitable for a Maine Coon?
A Maine Coon is on average 55–75 cm long and weighs up to 12 kg. The litter tray must be at least 1.5× the body length — so 83–113 cm. The standard self-cleaning litter tray (diameter 45 cm) is too small. The XXL version (effective internal space with a 42 cm opening for a full turning movement) is the minimum choice. Also ensure a low entry point — Maine Coons increasingly develop hip problems as they age.
My large cat eliminates beside the tray — is the tray too small?
That is the most likely cause if there is no medical reason. Check: can the cat turn around fully in the tray without touching the walls? Can it crouch comfortably without touching the opening? If not: the tray is too small. Medication, infections and stressful situations can also cause elimination beside the tray — rule those out with your vet first.
Can I use the XXL for 2 regular cats?
Yes. The XXL is also suitable for 2 cats of average size. The larger collection tray lasts longer (fewer empties with 2 cats) and the wider entry opening is more comfortable. For 2 cats the rule of thumb applies: 1 tray per cat + 1 extra. Start with 1 XXL and add a second if you see territorial conflict.
Water Fountains

Large cat, greater water intake

Large cats need more water than small ones. A water fountain with running water encourages water intake — even in cats that normally drink little.
