Rear container or drum bag: what's the difference?

Short answer

The difference is not in the rotating system, but in where the waste ends up afterwards. A bag inside the drum spins with every cleaning cycle and is invisible from outside. A separate rear container stops the waste immediately, is visible from the outside, and is swapped with one straight movement without touching the drum.

  • Drum bag: waste spins with every cycle, spreading bacteria
  • Rear container: waste falls straight in and never moves again
  • Fill level visible from outside, no branded bags required
  • Changing: pull container straight out, empty, slide back in

You're comparing self-cleaning litter boxes. Rotating system, whisper-quiet motor, app control: the specs look similar. Then you spot the small difference in the product photos: one has a bag somewhere inside the globe, the other has a rear container. Sounds like a detail. It isn't.

How does an automatic litter box work?

Most automatic litter boxes work with a rotating system. The drum rotates once after the cat leaves, sifts the litter and separates the clumps from clean sand. Up to this point all rotation systems are the same. The big difference lies in what happens to that waste afterwards.

Drum bag: how does it work and what are the downsides?

With the most common system, waste falls during rotation into a special bag inside the globe. That bag hangs from a holder on the inner wall of the drum. Simple in theory. In practice, there are four concrete downsides:

  • Waste spins with it. With every subsequent cleaning cycle, the entire globe rotates including the bag. Clumps already inside move again. Bacteria and odour compounds are redistributed through the system with every cycle.
  • Fill level not visible. The bag sits inside the globe. You can't see from outside how full it is. Checking requires opening or tilting the drum, which most people don't do daily. Result: the bag regularly overflows before anyone notices.
  • Leak spreads through the mechanism. If the bag tears, moisture spreads along the inner wall of the globe. Cleaning that takes time and is never fully visible.
  • Branded bags required. Most manufacturers of this system require specific bags that fit exactly. These are more expensive than ordinary bin liners and sometimes hard to buy separately.

Did you know?

Ammonia, the gas released by cat urine, is produced by bacteria breaking down urea. The more often clumps move and contact the inner wall of the drum, the more bacteria can spread. Less rotation after the first drop means less odour spreading.

Rear container: how does it work?

The Prime AnimalZ automatic litter box works differently. The drum rotates once and sifts the litter. Clumps slide through an opening into a separate container fixed at the rear. That container doesn't move. It doesn't rotate. Once waste falls in, that's the end point.

Changing takes three steps: pull the container straight back, empty it, slide it back. One movement, like emptying a bucket. No bending, no reaching into the drum, no touching the inner wall.

  • Waste never spins again. After the first drop into the container there is no further rotation. Bacteria stay isolated and are not redistributed through the drum.
  • Fill level visible from outside. You can see at a glance when the container is getting full. No unexpected overflows.
  • Leak stays in the container. If the bag leaks, moisture only spreads inside the container, not through the mechanism. Rinse the container separately in the sink.
  • Any ordinary bin liner works. No brand-specific bags required. Lower running costs, always available.

Our recommendation

A separate rear container wins on every practical point: hygiene, ease of use, cost and overview. It's also the system that's most comfortable for your cat, because a cleaner drum smells less and gets accepted more quickly.

  • Waste never spins again after the first drop
  • Visible from outside, easy to swap
  • No branded bags, no higher running costs
  • Leak stays isolated inside the container

Frequently asked questions

Does waste spin with every cleaning cycle when there's a bag in the drum?+

Yes. The entire globe rotates, including the contents of the bag. Clumps and waste already in the bag move with every subsequent cleaning cycle. With a rear container, waste leaves the drum after the first rotation and doesn't move again.

Can I use ordinary bin liners with the Prime AnimalZ?+

Yes. The separate container works with any ordinary small bin liner. No branded bags required. That saves considerably on running costs compared to manufacturers that require proprietary bags.

How do I know when the container is full?+

The container is translucent enough to roughly assess the fill level from outside. The Prime AnimalZ app also sends a notification when it's time to change. On average, the container for one cat is full once a week to once a fortnight.

Is the drum also easier to clean with the container variant?+

Yes. The drum itself stays relatively clean because waste leaves it immediately. The container rinses separately in the sink. More cleaning tips in our article about automatic litter box cleaning.

Why do other brands still choose a bag in the drum?+

A bag in the drum is simpler to produce and creates a recurring revenue model through branded bags. A rear container requires a more precise mechanism to guide waste correctly outwards. It's technically more complex, but considerably more practical for the end user.

Less hassle, better hygiene

The Prime AnimalZ automatic litter box XXL works with a separate rear container. No branded bags, no spinning waste, no surprises. Once a week, one movement: container out, empty, slide back.
