Quick answer

Replace the water fountain filter every 3–4 weeks with 1 cat, every 2–3 weeks with multiple cats. An old filter no longer works as a filter but as a source of bacteria. Disassemble and rinse the fountain itself weekly.

  • ✓ 1 cat: replace filter every 3–4 weeks
  • ✓ 2+ cats: replace filter every 2–3 weeks
  • ✓ Disassemble and rinse fountain weekly
  • ✓ Use filtered water for longer filter life

A water fountain filter left in too long does the opposite of what it is meant to. Activated carbon has a limited capacity — once saturated, bacteria attach to the filter material and are returned to the water. Most owners replace the filter too late, or forget altogether.

Signs the filter is too old: water smells musty or has a slight taste, the cat noticeably drinks less than normal, or you see a brown discolouration on the filter material. Do not wait for this — replace on schedule.

Step by step: replacing filter (D600A)

  1. Switch off fountain and unplugAlways disconnect power first before disassembling the fountain.
  2. Remove top bowl and pour out waterPour out the remaining water. Rinse the bowl directly under the tap.
  3. Open filter holder and remove old filterThrow the old filter away immediately — do not try to clean or reuse it. A used filter cannot be restored to its original function.
  4. Soak new filter in water for 10 minutesThis activates the carbon material. Do not skip this step — a dry filter works less well directly after placement.
  5. Place filter, fill fountain and startFill the fountain with fresh water, connect the plug and check whether the pump runs normally. First minute: water may be slightly cloudy — this is normal and clears after a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash and reuse the filter?
No. The activated carbon in the filter has a limited adsorption capacity. Once saturated, it cannot be reactivated by rinsing or washing. A washed filter looks clean but no longer works as a filter. Always use a new filter.
What happens if I never replace the filter?
The filter becomes saturated and starts returning bacteria to the water. The cat smells this before you do — she will drink less or start avoiding the fountain. In the long run, this can lead to dehydration and kidney disease. Replace on schedule, even if the water looks clean.
How long does a water fountain last?
With regular maintenance (weekly cleaning, filter replacement on schedule), the D600A lasts on average 3–5 years. The part that wears out first is the pump — available separately as a spare part so you don't need to replace the whole fountain.
