ETPU Balls vs Tennis Balls: What’s the Difference? (2026)
Short answer
ETPU balls travel twice as far as tennis balls on the same throwing setting. Tennis ball felt also wears down your dog's tooth enamel, and tennis balls split in half when chewed, creating a choking hazard. ETPU balls are safe, light and last 4 to 12 weeks with daily use.
- ✓Throwing distance: ETPU reaches 12/18/24m vs tennis ball 6/9/12m on the same setting
- ✓Teeth: tennis ball felt acts like sandpaper on tooth enamel, ETPU does not
- ✓Safety: tennis balls split in half, ETPU shrinks gradually
- ✓Lifespan: 4–12 weeks per ball with daily use, depending on chewing behaviour

➤ Frequently asked questions
Tennis balls are in every garden shed. They are cheap, available everywhere and your dog loves them. It is therefore understandable that many owners ask whether they can use ordinary tennis balls in their automatic ball launcher when the included ETPU balls run out. The answer is: technically yes, but the differences are larger than you think and one of the consequences only shows up at the vet.
In this article we explain the complete difference: throwing distance, effect on the teeth, safety when chewing, behaviour in the rain and how long ETPU balls last with daily use.
Tennis balls vs ETPU balls: why owners choose tennis balls
Tennis balls have a number of real advantages that make them attractive. They cost almost nothing, you can buy them in any supermarket, your dog already knows them and they technically fit in the funnel opening of the ball launcher. When the included ETPU balls wear out after a few months, reaching for a pack of tennis balls is understandable.
But there are two things you don't see until it's too late: what the felt does to your dog's teeth, and how a broken tennis ball ends up.
What tennis balls do to dog teeth
The felt on a tennis ball is not made for dog teeth. It is a woven synthetic material designed for bouncing on hard court surfaces. On a dog's tooth enamel, that same felt acts like sandpaper.
Every time your dog grabs the ball, releases it or chews on it, the rough felt scrapes against the enamel layer. This wear is not immediately visible but builds up. Vets describe this as "blunted teeth": the sharp tip of the tooth is gradually flattened. In dogs that have played intensively with tennis balls for years, this is clearly visible during a check-up.
Tooth enamel wear is irreversible. Once gone, the enamel is permanently gone. An ETPU ball has a smooth, closed-cell foam surface with no abrasive material. The ball compresses gently when bitten and returns to its shape without damaging the tooth.
Are tennis balls dangerous for dogs?
A tennis ball tears differently from an ETPU ball. The rubber cores of tennis balls are under internal pressure. If the felt layer is damaged and the rubber tears, the ball can suddenly split into two halves. Those halves are large enough to fit in the throat of a medium-sized dog.
Larger dogs with strong jaws can chew through a tennis ball in less than ten minutes. Never let your dog use a tennis ball unsupervised as a chew toy.
ETPU foam rubber wears gradually and shrinks. An ETPU ball does not fall apart: it gets smaller and softer. Replace it as soon as it becomes smaller than 5 cm, but the choking risk from sudden splitting does not exist with ETPU.
What exactly are ETPU balls?
ETPU stands for Expanded Thermoplastic Polyurethane: a closed-cell foam rubber also used in high-performance sports shoe soles. The material is light, resilient and does not absorb moisture. The same properties that make the material suitable for a shoe also make it suitable as a dog ball.
An ETPU ball weighs around 30 grams. A standard tennis ball weighs 57 grams. That weight difference is exactly the reason why the Ball Launcher Premium XL shoots an ETPU ball twice as far on the same throwing setting.
ETPU balls vs tennis balls: the complete comparison
| Property | Tennis ball (standard) | ETPU ball (Prime AnimalZ) |
|---|---|---|
| Throwing distance setting 1 | 6 metres | 12 metres |
| Throwing distance setting 2 | 9 metres | 18 metres |
| Throwing distance setting 3 | 12 metres | 24 metres |
| Weight | ~57 grams | ~30 grams |
| Surface | Rough felt (abrasive) | Smooth foam rubber |
| Effect on tooth enamel | Wears enamel when chewing | No wear |
| Safe when chewed apart | Halves = choking hazard | Shrinks gradually |
| Water absorption (outdoors) | Absorbs water, gets heavy | Closed-cell, absorbs nothing |
| Wear on launch opening | Faster due to rough felt | Slower due to smooth surface |
| Floats on water | Absorbs water, sinks | Always floats |
| Cleaning | Felt traps dirt and bacteria | Smooth surface, rinse and done |
| Price per unit | Cheaper | Slightly more expensive |
The most striking difference is in the throwing distance. On setting 3, the launcher shoots a tennis ball 12 metres. That same setting shoots an ETPU ball 24 metres: exactly double. For use in the garden or a large park, this is the difference between a mediocre and an excellent play session.
How long do ETPU balls last?
Lifespan depends mostly on your dog, not the ball. There are two types of use that determine wear: fetch use (ball rolls, bounces, dog picks it up) and chew use (dog chews on the ball after fetching or between sessions).
Light chewer
Dog fetches the ball but barely chews on it outside of throwing sessions.
Lifespan: 6–12 weeks per ball
Heavy chewer
Dog chews extensively on the ball after each throw or also outside play sessions.
Lifespan: 2–4 weeks per ball
With 2 sessions of 30 minutes per day, most ETPU balls last 4 to 8 weeks. Rotate a set of 5 so each ball wears evenly rather than always using the same one.
When to replace an ETPU ball? Replace the ball as soon as it (1) visibly cracks or flakes, (2) becomes smaller than 5 cm through wear, or (3) is so deformed that the sensor no longer reliably detects it in the funnel opening. Minor surface wear is normal and not a reason to replace.
For daily use we recommend a refill pack of 12. With intensive sessions with a heavy chewer you go through an average of 2 balls per month. 12 gives you half a year's peace of mind.
Outdoor use: what rain does to tennis balls
If you use the ball launcher outdoors and it has rained or the dog plays on wet grass, that directly affects a tennis ball. The felt absorbs water. After ten minutes of outdoor use, a tennis ball can weigh 20 to 30% more than when dry. At the same throwing power, that means shorter distance, slower bouncing and a ball that sticks in the funnel opening.
Wet tennis balls also bring bacteria and mould indoors. The felt is difficult to dry thoroughly and forms an ideal environment for bacterial growth that your dog ingests through its mouth.
ETPU foam rubber is a closed-cell material: it does not absorb water. After use in the rain you rinse the ball off and it is ready for the next session. The throwing distance stays the same whether dry or wet.
Buy ETPU balls
The balls fit all Prime AnimalZ ball launchers and are available in sets of 6 or 12. The 12-pack always keeps a spare ball ready and a supply for the coming months.

When can you still use tennis balls?
There are two situations where a tennis ball is the better choice.
Indoors on setting 1. If you use the ball launcher indoors on the shortest setting, 12 metres (ETPU on setting 1) is too far for most living rooms. 6 metres (tennis ball on setting 1) is better suited to a small space. In that specific case, the shorter throwing distance is an advantage.
As a temporary emergency solution. Your ETPU balls are used up and the refill pack is still on the way. A 5.5 cm diameter tennis ball fits in the funnel and works as a temporary replacement. Keep an eye on your dog and use the lowest throwing setting.
Note the size. Only use tennis balls with a 5.5 cm diameter. Smaller balls fit too loosely and create a choking hazard. Larger balls damage the funnel opening when forced.
